Marysville community Blog

Hi all

Spring is here and time for a change! Due to the increasing spam attacks, I thought I would try a new blog space. The old blog is still available at
http://marysvillecommunity.net/wordpress/

But please try this one out and see what you think

Vicki

  1. Thanks, Vicki, for trying everything so that all us Marysvillians (is that a real word?) can keep in touch.
Hopefully spamalot and all his friends can't follow us here.

  2. Hi Vicki, thanks for that. Everytime I opened the site and saw so many responses I thought the whole town must have been there. It was disappointing when you saw so much trash from O/seas networks. I look forward to hearing how people are travelling and how things are progressing.

  3. Great idea Vicki, to have a "Spring clean" on the blog and hopefully many positive sharing ideas will flourish - we are looking forward to starting the rebuilding process before the end of the year, it is time now. Thanks for your wonderful support with the website and many other activities.

  4. The fresias, Iris's, Tulips are all flowering and giving a wonderful show of strength and resiliance - perhaps we need to learn from them.

  6. What a magnificent sight the Joy & Lloyd Gould poplars are making with their new shoots about to burst forward.

  7. Is anyone aware of where we can discuss the Royal Commission? I've been grossly misquoted, and I'm pretty upset. It could have repercussions down the track for me.

  8. Well the news is finally out re secondary homes. VBAF are not able to assist except in the "most extreme exceptional circumstances". Surely this is the criteria for Marysville second home owners!!!!!!!!!!

  9. I wonder how many of the 'holiday rentals' are going to be rebuilt? I think there were >40 in the Marysville environs and without them to add to the accommodation profile of the town then buildings like the Russell Crowe Performing Arts Centre if built may struggle to fill seats!

  11. Hi all-
Don't know if you all caught up with the news of a Marysville/Triangle contingent visiting Canberra last week. There was a commitment made at a meeting with Kevin Rudd, and in parliament to look into the issues around small business and rebuilding for part time residents. Let us hope something comes of this, but it is a step forward I think

  12. Noticed how nobody has bothered to reply to the news that part-timers have been mentioned in parliament? I don't think anyone feels that anything will be offered to part-timers ever.

  13. Hi Vicki

This is Carol and Lisa (part timers) from the former Rose Cottage. You may remember Carol from the earlier MOCA meetings?! (We have been in touch with John Cann on a regular basis to keep our spirits up and focus on why return to Marysville).

We are proud to say that, like yourself and despite no current Government incentives (tax rebates or grant funding)for part timers, we are currently rebuilding and are on the way to being at 'lock up' stage by Christmas. How did we do this? We needed time out from the hulabaloo, the Government, media and community misinformation and disenfranchised community that are also feeling the trauma and loss. We needed to personally regroup, focus and choose to stay or leave as we were also feeling the loss and hurt too and rebuilding takes a lot of energy! We decided that even though it might be easy to take the insurance money and run, it did not feel right in our heart of hearts. Marysville and the surrounds has given our family a great source of physical and emotional peace, joy and life over the past 20 years and we are just too attached to the town and the people.

We are disappointed like most Marysville residents (part time and full time) that part timers are not recognised and are not incentivised to return to the town and help reinvest and add accomodation into the town. However, if some of us don't make a heartfelt choice to return it will be disappointing on many levels. The rebuilding of Marysville will take many years......I'd like to hope that part timers will be the key contributors and founders to support the natural leaders (that already are making a difference) for the new Marysville.

Signing off for now and hope to see you before Christmas when we are in Marysville

  14. Is it true that the temporary shopping complex is opening on the 5/12/o9?

  15. Back again... Overjoyed to see so many plants and trees coming back to life, some poking their heads out after nearly a year in hiding - we expect more over the next year or so. It's a bit like the residents... some rebuild straight away... others recover and wait a bit. Today I looked across to red hill and was struck by the beauty.

  16. Please don't give up on hope that you may become eligible for some sort of grant especially businesses and paart timers - We have been appealing - reappealing rejection - and more and were successful at long last. BUT NOBODY SHOULD EVER HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE EXTREME STRESS IN TRYING TO GAIN WHAT IS RIGHTLY YOURS - I realise that VBAF are trying to work within very strict rules but if only some communication was forthcoming it would be much easier to prove your case.

  17. Hi all
Just a follow up on the issue of VBAF grants for part time residents. The case studies provided were sent to the PMs office prior to Xmas. I have been following up, and feedback is they are going through the system, and will be bought to the attention of the relevant Treasury official.

Nice to see some of you around town over summer- more building going up every day!

There has also been some activity on the "iconic building" front, more on this as it becomes available

  18. Is the Triangle News available on-line? I've looked at every link available, and searched high and low but can't find it anywhere. It was a real information-life-line back to our community for those of us not residing in the area, and now it's MIA.
If it's not possible to publish on-line anymore, how can we get a regular copy?

  19. Hi there, I stayed at Kookaburra Ridge in Jan last year and accidentally took a child's book home "Mr Forgetful" - 'Billy Caulfield' written on the cover. If this has sentimental value and you would appreciate it being returned to you please phone Jacqui 0447 339 255

  20. Hi,
I'm not a Marysvillian but am from Melbourne. I lost someone very close to me in the bushfires. I have visited your pretty little town many times in the last 12 months. Please forgive me for taking your thoughts back to that awfull day but I must ask one question. Did anyone see a man tall dark short hair in or around the hardware shop on the morning of the 7/2/09. He would have been with a female companion blonde very petitte and had a dalmation dog. He drove a two tan colour four wheel drive. I believe he bought something at the hardware store.

  21. Hi, is there a link to read more about this?.....Part time residents- after many months of lobbying at all levels (including the Prime Minister), a task force has now been established "to consider ways to assist owners of NPPRS (Non-principal places of residence) that were destroved in the February 2009 Victorian bushfires". More here
    Thanks!

  23. Here's a quote from a letter I received from ASSISTANT TREASURER, SENATOR NICK SHERRY:'After giving serious consideration, the Government decided that, on balance, it would not be appropriate to remove the restriction that financial assistance to owners of second homes be only to those in charitable need, for the following reasons.
Firstly, the provision of support to secondary home owners would likely be inconsistent with the charitable expectations of donors, many of whom would be unable to afford a second home, regardless of their income, wealth,or other assets, there is a risk that this support would be received negatively by donors and the public.
Secondly, there is a risk that provision of assistance would reinforce a view within the community that support will be provided by charitable and government sources for all losses or property, including second homes, in the event of a disaster. This may cause people to neglect their responsibilities to adequately insure their homes and contents .

  24. Very sad and ill informed comment, but I can't say I'm surprised. MATDG will continue to follow up on the issue, but it doesn't look like there will be a positive outcome at this stage

  25. Is it possible for the minutes of the MOCA meetings be put on the website for those of us who are unable to attend every meeting? Thanks :)
